Dr. Andrii Oleksandrenko, Postdoctoral Scholar

Dr. Oleksandrenko has been working in the SWAMP laboratory since 2020, first as a Graduate Research Assistant during his PhD, and now as a Postdoctoral Scholar. His current research is focused on assessing the environmental and agricultural impacts of the war in Ukraine, with the long-term goal of developing science-based frameworks and international collaborations for restoring war-affected farmland.

His doctoral research investigated fallout radionuclides and trace metals preserved in peat bogs, using these natural archives to reconstruct past atmospheric deposition and to explore their role as stratigraphic markers of the Anthropocene. Through quantitative analysis of trace elements and radionuclides, he studied their mobility in peat and peat porewaters, contributing to understanding of contamination, geochemical cycling, and environmental change.

As an ecologist with a BSc in Ecology, Environmental Protection and Conservation, and an MSc(Eng) in Ecology and Sustainable Management of Pollution, Dr. Oleksandrenko has a strong interdisciplinary foundation bridging ecology, soil science, and environmental geochemistry. His interests lie in applying this expertise to global challenges, from monitoring industrial emissions in Canada to planning large-scale land restorations after disasters.

Beyond his research, Andrii enjoys spending time outdoors, traveling, and engaging in community initiatives related to environmental protection and resilience. He is passionate about building international, multidisciplinary networks that link science with practical solutions for society.
